To clean a phone case safely, remove the phone first, check the case maker’s care instructions, and start with a soft lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water. Wipe the inside and outside gently, then let the case dry completely before reinstalling it. Stop there unless the maker confirms that soap, alcohol, soaking or another method is safe for that exact material.
This cautious approach matters because cases that look similar can use different plastics, coatings, prints, adhesives, fabrics or electronics. A cleaner that works on one case can fade, cloud, soften or loosen another.

- A second dry cloth
- The case maker’s care instructions, when available
Do not begin with bleach, hydrogen peroxide, window cleaner, household spray, solvent, ammonia, abrasive powder or a rough scrubber. Apple specifically warns against those products for its silicone, clear, polycarbonate and thermoplastic polyurethane iPhone cases.
How to Clean a Phone Case: The Safest Basic Method
- Remove the phone. Disconnect chargers and accessories, then take the phone out of the case.
- Check the label or product page. Look for material-specific cleaning instructions and warnings.
- Remove loose debris. Use a dry lint-free cloth, especially around the camera opening, buttons and corners.
- Dampen the cloth. Use a small amount of fresh water. The cloth should not drip.
- Wipe gently. Clean the outside and inside without aggressive rubbing.
- Dry the case. Wipe off remaining moisture and let the case air-dry completely before putting the phone back.
Never spray liquid directly onto the phone or clean the case while it is still installed. Moisture and loosened debris can move toward the camera, buttons, speaker openings or charging port.
Cleaning by Case Material
Use the least aggressive method that works, and treat the maker’s instructions as the final authority. If you cannot verify the material, stay with a slightly damp lint-free cloth.
Silicone, Clear Plastic, Polycarbonate and TPU Cases
Apple’s guidance for its silicone, clear, polycarbonate and thermoplastic polyurethane cases is to remove the iPhone and wipe both sides of the case with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Apple says not to use window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, ammonia, abrasives or cleaners containing hydrogen peroxide.
That is a safe starting point, not proof that every third-party case has identical care requirements. Printed surfaces, coatings and glued decorations may need even gentler handling.
Fabric Cases
Fabric cases vary widely. Google’s instructions for some Pixel fabric cases use a damp cloth with a small amount of mild soap, followed by cold-water rinsing and air drying. The same instructions say not to machine-wash newer models that use other materials.
Use that method only when the maker identifies the case as washable fabric. Do not soak a case with rigid inserts, adhesives, electronics or decorations unless its own instructions permit it.
Leather or Leather-Like Cases
First verify whether the case is actually leather. Apple notes that cleaning its leather cases can affect color and that leather cleaners or conditioners can change the appearance. Its instructions use a clean cloth, warm water and mild hand soap, applied gently.
Do not transfer that method automatically to coated, synthetic or unknown materials. If the product page does not verify the material, use the basic damp-cloth method and avoid making the case wet.
Wallet, Card-Holder and Crossbody Cases
Clean each component according to its own material. Remove detachable cards, straps or pouches first. Keep liquid away from metal fittings, magnets, seams and glued areas unless the maker gives a different instruction.

How to Handle Stains Without Damaging the Case
Start with repeated gentle passes using the approved basic method. More pressure is not always better: rough scrubbing can dull a finish, lift a print or make a clear surface look cloudy.
If a stain remains, check the maker’s instructions before adding soap, alcohol, stain remover or another product. Test any maker-approved method on a small, less visible area first. Stop if color transfers to the cloth, the surface becomes tacky or a coating changes.
Can You Remove Yellowing From a Clear Case?
Cleaning can remove surface dirt and oils, but it cannot always reverse a permanent material change. If a clear case remains yellow after gentle cleaning, stronger chemicals may damage the case without restoring its original appearance.
This guide does not recommend bleach, peroxide or abrasive scrubbing. A separate clear-case guide can address discoloration in depth without turning the general cleaning routine into a harsh treatment.
What About Disinfecting?
Cleaning and disinfecting are different tasks. Apple allows certain disinfecting wipes on hard, nonporous surfaces of Apple products, but it says not to use those products on fabric or leather surfaces. That does not automatically authorize the same wipe for every third-party phone case.
If disinfection is necessary, follow the case maker’s instructions for the exact material. Do not submerge the phone or case in cleaner, and do not let moisture enter openings or electronic components.
Cases With Magnets, Batteries or Electronics
Use extra care with battery cases, lighted cases and accessories that contain connectors or electronics. Do not soak them. Keep liquids away from charging contacts and follow the product’s own instructions.
For Apple MagSafe accessories, Apple recommends brushing debris from the magnetic ring before cleaning and disconnecting the accessory from power. A phone case with a decorative magnetic ring is not automatically covered by those accessory instructions.
How Often Should You Clean a Phone Case?
Clean it when you notice dirt, residue, makeup, color transfer or debris inside the case. There is no useful universal schedule because use, environment and material differ. A quick dry wipe between deeper cleanings can keep grit from collecting around the camera opening and corners.
When It May Be Time to Replace the Case
Cleaning cannot repair a split corner, stretched edge, broken clasp, loose decoration or damaged electronic component. Replace a case that no longer holds the phone correctly or blocks controls and openings.

Phone Case Cleaning FAQ
Can I wash a phone case with dish soap?
Only if the maker’s instructions allow it for that material. Start with a slightly damp lint-free cloth. Avoid soaking cases with electronics, metal parts, prints, glued details or unknown construction.
Can I use rubbing alcohol on a phone case?
Do not assume it is safe. Alcohol can affect some coatings, prints, adhesives and materials. Use it only when the maker specifically approves it for the exact case.
Can I put my phone case in a dishwasher or washing machine?
Not unless the maker explicitly says to. Heat, detergent and agitation can deform the shell or damage finishes and attached parts.
Should the case be completely dry before reinstalling it?
Yes. Dry the case with a soft cloth and allow remaining moisture to evaporate before the phone goes back inside.
