Why Do Clear Phone Cases Turn Yellow?
There is no single cause for every case because “clear” describes appearance, not one material. Surface grime can add a yellow or brown cast. Heat, light, handling, and age can also affect some transparent polymers.
Laboratory research on polyurethane has shown that ultraviolet exposure can change its chemical structure and produce progressive yellowing. That helps explain why a flexible transparent case can remain discolored after its surface is clean. It does not prove that every clear case is polyurethane or that every formulation ages at the same rate.
A hard transparent back, flexible edge, printed insert, and surface coating may all respond differently. Avoid diagnosing the material from appearance alone.
How to Tell Surface Dirt From Material Yellowing
Clean a small, less visible area with the approved basic method. If the cloth removes residue and that area becomes clearer, surface contamination is part of the problem. If the cleaned area stays evenly yellow while feeling clean, the color may be within the material.
